The Amazing Gastric Balloon Pill
|
Who is the Obalon Gastric balloon Pill suitable for?
The Obalon gastric balloon pill is gastric balloon cleverly made in pill or capsule form which the patient swallows to help obese and over weight people to achieve rapid weight loss without the need to undergo invasive surgery.
It starts when you swallow a capsule containing a balloon attached to a thin tube. The Obalon gastric balloon pill is then inflated once it is in position inside the stomach, once inflated the balloon effectively reduces the free volume of the stomach area restricting how much a person can eat before they feel full. The fitting of Intra-gastric balloons is not new, and is sometimes provided to extremely obese patients although these have to be surgically implanted by a qualified bariatric surgeon or doctor. In some Europe Countries the Obalon Gastric balloon Pill has been approved and is available for obese adults, however in the UK it is currently only available privately and has not as yet been approved by “NICE” the NHS authorising body.
What is the Obalon Gastric balloon Pill and how does it work?
The Obalon Gastric balloon Pill is designed to be used for a maximum period of three months.
The Gastric Balloon pill system itself consists of up to three lightweight balloons which are placed in the stomach over a 12-week period. The actual number of gastric balloon pills used for each patient can be tailored to the person’s weight loss progress, with a single gastric balloon pill placed in the stomach initially and subsequently additional balloons added if needed over the following weeks.
The gastric balloon pill is designed to be used by people with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or above and who have previously failed to lose weight through diet and exercise. This is a major development in Bariatric Surgery circles as most other bariatric surgery is only available to those with a BMI of 30 or above. Treatment is relatively simple as all that is needed is to swallow the gastric balloon pill which is a small capsule roughly the size of a large vitamin pill, which has a small tube attached to it. Once the capsule reaches the stomach, it opens up and releases the balloon.
The Surgeon then views where the balloon is positioned with an X-ray and then once he is satisfied with the location he inflates the balloon with gas through the tube. Once the gastric balloon is inflated, the tube is removed, leaving the balloon in the stomach.
The whole procedure takes about 15 minutes with no sedation or anaesthetic is required. After the surgery the patient is then required to follow a special diet for three days. The diet consisting of clear liquids only on day one and then soft foods only on day two with most people able to eat solid foods on day three. Adjustments to the effect of the balloon can be made after 30 days when the surgeon may recommend the use of a second gastric balloon pill. Should further adjustments be required a third gastric Balloon pill can used 30 days after that, depending on a person’s progress.
Twelve weeks after the initial gastric balloon pill is swallowed, all balloons MUST be removed using an endoscope when light sedation may be required for this procedure, which usually only takes about 15-30 minutes.
